A Passion for India
My passion for India started when I was 10 years old and my Dad went to Delhi with the Church. He came back with stories of this amazing place and these amazing people, seeing all these incredible sights! Little did I know then but eight years later everything would fall into place for me to be able to travel to and spend two weeks in India. I fell in love with the country, its people and their culture. Sitting on the dusty floor in someone’s home and worshiping God in a language I didn’t understand was a unique experience which was repeated over and over again in villages, slums, churches and hotels during those two weeks and my subsequent two visits!
The faith these people show and the passion they have for God and for the salvation of the people around them is inspirational. I have visited Churches in slums, villages, mountains, towns and cities and each time we were met with great warmth, brilliant hospitality and a passion for God.
Traveling around northern India gives you a taste of the different places the area has to offer and I am so glad that I not only spent time in Delhi, but also in Chandigarh, Ambala and Karnal. Again, wherever you visit there are lots of friendly people and great hospitality.
India is by no means an easy place to visit and travel around; there are lots of things to consider when traveling there. It is not the safest of paces to be a Christian, but the local Christians look after us well and only take us to safe places. There are other precautions to take, such as only drinking bottled water, wearing trainers when visiting slums, packing bottles and bottles of insect repellant and always remember a few toilet rolls!
When I first arrived in India in 2006 I thought it would be a one off trip, but after having only been there a few days I decided I would be back! Eighteen months later the opportunity came up to go again and I managed to get away from university for a few weeks to go! My third trip (in 2009) was very eventful, it included two days working in a slum project in Delhi, an emotional visit to my sponsor Child on the edge of Delhi and a pretty bad dose of Delhi belly! I left India last time (still feeling ill!) wondering if I would return again but I am pleased to say that I shall be booking a flight soon to make a trip in the Autumn of 2011! |
